The proactive model for adolescent suicide prevention in Lane County, Oregon, was designed and implemented in 1990 to provide a practical response to suicidal gestures and attempts in juvenile detention facilities.
Abstract
A group of professionals was convened to study the extent of the juvenile suicide problem. Group members reached four conclusions: (1) all detained youth fall into moderate- to high- risk groups; (2) research is lacking on high-risk juveniles outside psychiatric hospitals; (3) assessment devices have traditionally been used to differentiate between normal and at- risk populations; and (4) institutional interventions need to be developed to identify and prevent future suicide attempts by youth. The adolescent suicide prevention program in Lane County involves assessing primary and secondary risk factors by a panel of five members. The program also includes the use of an intake screening questionnaire and physical security in detention facilities to eliminate objects and equipment that may be used to commit suicide. In addition, children who are likely to follow another child in a suicide attempt are monitored. The program recognizes that conduct disorders and suicide attempts represent manifestations of deeper psychological disturbances and coping skill deficits. 9 references
