In 1992-1993, custodial admissions (excluding Ontario) increased by 1 percent over the previous year, except in Prince Edward Island, Manitoba, and Saskatchewan, where the admission rate fell. Nationally, nonsentenced admissions decreased by 3 percent from the previous year. On average, 26,477 inmates were serving a custodial sentence during the reporting period; 53 percent were housed in provincial and 47 percent in Federal prisons. The average number of offenders on probation increased by 8 percent over the previous year, while the number of inmates granted full parole by Federal and provincial boards rose by 17 percent.
