Abstract
There are three major pressures affecting the shape of the hustlers' community: (1) AIDS, because they are at exceptionally high risk and the methods they use to cope with the disease are an important part of the life of the street; (2) Crack cocaine, which has changed the relationship between hustler and client as well as the relationships among the boys themselves; and (3) Gentrification of the Times Square area, which has altered the boys' preconceptions of hustling and their place in it. The author concludes that social changes are causing the community of Times Square hustlers to fragment, and, while hustling will remain a part of the Square's future, it is not clear that the hustler community can overcome the obstacles presented by those changes.
