This report outlines an approach for helping drug-dependent offenders to develop the requisite skills for preventing relapse.
Abstract
This approach is based on the idea that recovery takes place over time and in specific stages. The six stages of the recovery strategy outlined here include transition to accepting the goal of abstinence, physical and psychological stabilization, early recovery, middle recovery, late recovery, and maintenance. Treatment programs for relapse-prone clients should provide help in the areas of self-regulation and stabilization, self-assessment, coping skills, recovery activities, daily monitoring techniques, and support from family and friends. Court-ordered drug treatment programs tend to reduce recidivism and relapse among offenders and to increase offender involvement in community programs and the time they spend in treatment. Successful treatment programs within the criminal justice system must interact with those in the community. 23 references
