This is the fourth in a series of updates to the original work completed in 1987. The previous update (1990) was expanded to include a highlight section and national summaries. This update expands the explanation of the definition and classification scheme and includes a description of the courts that exercise juvenile jurisdiction in each State profile. This update also includes a new table for the States that consolidate the delivery of juvenile services in one agency. The update improves on the presentation of the information in the table summaries and includes profiles for Guam, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands. The highlights section describes recent changes in nine States, and the national summary of juvenile services provides an overview of what is occurring in the organization and administration of juvenile services in all the States. For the State profiles of juvenile services, each profile begins with the organization/administration classification (local/judicial, local/executive, State/judicial/, State/executive, and combination) for probation, aftercare, and State delinquent institutions. The classifications are followed by an explanation of the courts that exercise juvenile jurisdiction, as well as profiles of probation, aftercare, and State institutions for delinquent youth. The table summaries present the organization and administration classifications assigned to juvenile services in each State so as to permit quick State comparisons. 7 tables
