This packet presents materials for use in developing and presenting a school-based curriculum for grades two through seven designed to present antigang and antidrug messages to students.
Abstract
A loose-leaf book contains outlines of lesson components that focus on responsible citizenship, the dynamics of cultural diversity, choices and consequences, refusal skills, and success and achievement. Some topics addressed are identification of risks, strategies to deal with danger, weapon-violence prevention, and resistance to peer pressure. Each lesson-plan outline contains an overview of the lesson plan, academic and prevention objectives, teaching strategies, student activities, background information on drugs and gangs, variations and extensions of the lessons, and student and teacher materials. A training manual is included as a comprehensive staff development tool that contains the curriculum rationale, the scope and sequence of the lessons, instruction techniques, and implementation procedures. Three videotapes for use in instruction pertain to gang signs and symptoms, graffiti as the language of gangs, and the importance of maintaining an individual identity apart from peer pressure to conform to group mandates. Two audiotapes are designed to present the problems and symptoms of drug abuse and gang activity to parents, administrators, and community leaders, so as to gain their cooperation and support. A series of Macintosh diskettes provides an interactive educational approach. Also included are a practical guide for decisionmakers, resource information, and a gang/drug curriculum resource directory.
