Information came from participant observations, formal and informal interviews, and a review of documents. Results revealed that these inmates were previously unemployed or employed as unskilled labor working at or below minimum wage. Work histories varied greatly. At the institution, school was not a standard scheduled activity due to the institution's limitations and the perceived needs of these inmates. Thus, these inmates entered with low skills and did not receive any skill enhancement to facilitate their reentry into society.
