Following a description of the research design, which included separate procedures for collecting data from college students, high school seniors, and adolescents in 8th and 10th grade, this report details the prevalence of drug use among young adults, trends in drug use among young adults, attitudes and beliefs about drugs in this population, and the social milieu in which young adults use drugs. Two separate chapters outline survey results vis-a-vis the prevalence of drug use and trends in drug use among college students. The results showed that, for all the groups surveyed, the use of illicit drugs rose sharply, as beliefs and attitudes about drugs eroded further. Among college students and young adults, the use of marijuana use leveled off, but the proportion of respondents using all other illicit drugs rose. Trends in alcohol use and cigarette smoking are also discussed here, and results are analyzed in terms of college-noncollege differences, gender differences, and racial differences. 27 tables and 48 figures
