Child Abuse Crimes: Physical Abuse (Current through December 31, 1993)

NCJ Number
152805
Date Published
1994
Length
30 pages
Annotation
This document summarizes State and territorial legislation defining specific crimes involving the physical abuse of children.
Abstract
The summaries are designed to provide a reference for persons researching criminal child abuse legislation; they present an abridged and potentially incomplete picture of charging statutes in various States and is intended only as an initial reference. The entries do not include sentencing information for every statute, although this information is occasionally included in the text of statutes annotated here. Only statutes identifying children as victims are included, while those pertaining to other related offenses such as general assault and battery have been omitted. Neglect, abandonment, and endangerment statutes have not been incorporated into this compilation unless all such offenses are defined within one physical abuse statute. Definitions are included only when referred to in the statute and needed for understanding it. Defenses to the crime of physical abuse are not included here.
