The USFPD, which serves a community of over 40,000 on a daily basis, has evolved in many areas of technology. The local area network (LAN), for example, was used to process about 8,000 incidents in 1993. Incidents ranged in severity from police information reports to sexual battery. The University of South Florida's LAN is also connected to Internet, and the LAN system is used to warn the community of crime patterns and suspicious activities. The USFPD is involved in the Uniform Crime Reporting Program, and data are compiled using computerized techniques. In addition, the USFPD has an emergency communications system in its police communications center that employs computer-aided dispatch and has a number of patrol officers and detectives trained in radar for campus speed limit enforcement. The cost-effectiveness of using technology in police work is examined.
