The author of this book States that he conducted the first national survey among male survivors of sexual abuse. This study was based on questionnaire responses of 124 men and semi-structured clinical interviews with nine of those men. Using the results of this study, this book examines the phenomenon and long-term impact of sexual abuse on male children, and dispels many myths regarding the invulnerability of male victims. The first five chapters are intended to provide a context within which the study may be read. The succeeding four chapters present the study itself, including methodology and a detailed description of characteristics of the participants. The author argues that various societal myths and beliefs have led to a profound underrecognition of male sexual abuse, and that increased attention to, and acknowledgement of, male victimization is needed to reduce the isolation of male survivors, as well as aid in the decrease of abuse incidents. Modifications and revisions of conceptual frameworks regarding long-term consequences of childhood sexual abuse also are proposed as they apply to the male experience. References, index
