Data on the monthly prison populations and movements addresses each month from October 1993 through October 1994. The total institutional population as of October 1994 was 126,412, compared to 118,995 in October 1993. Institutional population numbers by commitment and movement type are distinguished by male and female inmates. Prison population movements are also shown for each month from October 1993 through October 1994. Population movements are presented by those received through new admissions and parole returns, as well as "other returns." Information on those released encompasses those paroled, discharged, death while in custody, and "other releases." Other data show racial-ethnic distribution by institution, parole population and movements by commitment type, and parole racial-ethnic distribution by region. A glossary of terms and definitions is included.
