This report presents statistics on the average daily inmate population and receptions to correctional institutions in Scotland during 1993.
Abstract
The average daily inmate population was 5,637, the highest number ever recorded and an increase of 7 percent over 1992. The average number of sentenced adults increased by 7 percent from 3,552 in 1992 to 3,795 in 1993, which was another new record. The average number of sentenced young offenders increased by 7 percent form 769 to 819. The average number of adult inmates serving sentences of less than 3 months declined by 5 percent from 1992 to 1993, while the average number serving sentences of 18 months to 3 years increased 15 percent and the number serving 3 years and over but not life sentences increased by 10 percent. The average remand population increased from 876 in 1992 to 948 in 1993. The number of inmates imprisoned due to fine defaults increased from 8,339 in 1992 to 9,616 in 1993.
