The Scottish police recorded 543,000 crimes and 442,000 offenses, a decline of 8 percent and an increase of 2 percent respectively from 1992. Nonsexual violent crimes declined by 17 percent to 19,000, while sexual assault cases increased by 1 percent. The largest single increase in any category was in drug law offenses, which increased 33 percent to 18,000. Recorded cases of vandalism, including malicious mischief and reckless conduct with firearms, declined by 9 percent to 80,000. The clearance rate increased from 32 percent of crime in 1992 to 34 percent in 1993, the highest rate in the past 5 years. However, the actual number of crimes cleared by the police decreased by 2 percent, and the number cleared declined from 14 per police officer in 1992 to 13 in 1993.
