Many U.S. companies are using new kinds of resources, including demographic data, crime data, crime predictions, and facility design, to make their businesses more crime-resistant.
Abstract
For example, a company might gather information about a neighborhood's population density, income, education levels, vehicles, types of housing, and health of the local economy in order to design facilities appropriate to the level of risk in that locale. Crime data, especially that related to gang activity and drug use, can also help security personnel and managers to gauge the security risks inherent in a particular location. Consulting companies can provide businesses with several types of computerized crime prediction reports that take into account the neighborhood's level of social disorder, crimes already committed there, and comparisons with other neighborhoods in the local area. Design elements important to security include site selection, exterior and interior design, and on-site equipment.
