This revised and updated edition of the book originally published in 1984 is designed to meet the needs of students, police, and citizens. It can also be a desk reference for those who deal with the criminal law daily. This new edition includes intervening developments in the substantive statutory criminal law, the law of criminal procedure, legislative changes that affect the criminal justice system, and changes in penalties and sentencing practices through the end of the 1989 session of the South Carolina Legislature. In addition, a number of chapters have been reorganized and revised; some subsections have been expanded, notably those on sentencing, searches and seizures, and interrogations and confessions. The revisions include significant U.S. Supreme Court decisions that deal with trash, helicopter, and prison-cell searches, as well as updating decisions of the South Carolina Supreme Court that affect the criminal justice system.
