This publication provides information regarding the projects supported by the Federal Maternal and Child Health Bureau and focusing on the prevention of violence and unintentional injuries.
Abstract
Support for these programs comes from the Maternal and Child Health Services Block Grant; 15 percent of the appropriation is awarded on a competitive basis to special projects of regional and national significance (SPRANS). Since injury disproportionately affects the young and because it is a major cause of death and disability for children and adolescents, the bureau initiated a special program effort through SPRANS grants and cooperative agreements to prevent injury to children and adolescents. The bureau currently funds 22 projects; 3 others were completed in FY 1992 and 10 were completed in FY 1991. Demonstration projects focus on adolescent violence prevention, home safety, brain injury prevention, and other topics. Research and training projects focus on domestic assault, safety in child care programs, behavioral and familial predictors of injuries in children, and drowning prevention. Technical assistance projects focus on prevention resource centers in several locations. Each project is described with respect to the organization conducting it, the project director, the focus, the goals and objectives, the methodology, and evaluation measures.
