In response to incidents of violence in the workplace, the U.S. Postal Service has reviewed security measures, established pre-employment screening measures, and expanded the Service's Employee Assistance Program. To deal with potential violence and/or harm from external sources, the Service provides delivery personnel with advice, training, and information on how to avoid dangerous situations. Motor vehicle collisions are the leading cause of death in the workplace; in response, the Service has developed a comprehensive driver training program comprised of defensive driving techniques, controlled driving instruction, and an active safety belt program. Other unique issues that the Service has confronted and responded to include ergonomic concerns related to increasing automation within the postal system, repetitive-strain and other job-related injuries, dogs, and weather-related safety issues.
