This report provides a comprehensive description of the range of political violence directed against American citizens and interests during 1992.
Abstract
In addition to examining terrorism-related activities, the report covers other instances of violence affecting Americans. The selection of incidents used here was based on the criteria of lethality, major property damage, unusual tactics or weapons used, and perceptibility of targets as American or representing U.S. interests. Of the 189 anti-U.S. incidents perpetrated in 1992, 133 occurred in the Inter-American region, 22 in Europe, 17 in the Near East and South Asia, eight in East Asia and the Pacific region, and nine in sub-Saharan Africa. The incidents are arranged chronologically by region; they are classified by target (diplomatic, business, government, military, religious, private) and type of attack (bombing, grenade, assault, rocket/mortar, vandalism, armed assault, attempted assassination, violent demonstration, car bombing, hijacking, strafing/sniping, kidnapping, arson, ambush). The report concludes with a summary of incidents in which American citizens were taken captive.
