The growing problem of international organized crime was the focus of hearings convened in April 1994 by the Senate Foreign Relations Committee's Subcommittee on Terrorism, Narcotics, and International Operations.
Abstract
One speaker at the hearings, a professor at Georgetown University and president of the National Strategy Information Center, presented his views on the threat of organized crime to U.S. interests at home and abroad. He identified five measures to improve the U.S. and international response to organized crime: (1) ongoing assessments of the problem; (2) development of national strategies and policies; (3) law enforcement improvements; (4) disruption of criminal organizations; and (5) education and prevention. He stressed the importance of international cooperation, particularly with respect to drug law enforcement and money laundering, and the need for collaboration between law enforcement and intelligence. In addition, he addressed the scope of the international organized crime problem and proactive strategies to prevent organized crime.
