The first chapter increases the practitioner's knowledge of domestic violence in relation to health care responses, some general facts, and definitions and terminology. The second chapter discusses contributing factors to domestic violence as well as the general dynamics of abusive relationships. The manual examines the characteristics and dynamics of perpetrators and victims, as well as the different cycles or patterns of violence couples may experience. The role of health care professionals is explored in terms of domestic violence prevention, ethical and legal duties, and barriers to diagnosis and treatment. The final chapters deal with social policy; strategic planning for developing and maintaining policies and procedures; and identification, assessment, documentation, and intervention issues. 1 appendix
