This annual architecture, construction and design issue focuses on the impact on prison construction of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
Abstract
Designers need to be aware of the full scope of rights that the ADA offers to inmates, visitors, and staff. Corrections professionals involved in prison design need to be cognizant of specific design regulations required by the ADA. Operational decisions regarding offender classification and movement will also affect construction and architecture costs. Following an overview of ADA regulations, the articles in this issue describe the approach taken by the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections to satisfy ADA requirements for an urban prison system, the problems that small facilities may have in fulfilling ADA criteria, and the need for self-evaluations by corrections administrators in order to avoid lawsuits stemming from ADA violations.
