The discussions emphasize that violence among children is multifaceted, multidimensional, and complex and therefore cannot be addressed through simple explanations and solutions. Instead, thorough analysis and comprehensive and long-term remediation strategies are needed. Individual papers present the perspectives of educators, students, parents, and law enforcement officials regarding school violence; discuss gangs and gang-related behaviors; examine the link between domestic assault and school violence; and describe a variety of types of violence. Additional papers focus on governmental initiatives to reduce violence in schools, the preservice preparation of students, the actions parents should take to disarm their children, and gang prevention measures. Further papers focus on the role of teachers, examining topics such as mediation of power struggles between students, helping develop a sense of self in schoolage children, the use of students in conflict resolution, critical thinking as a conflict resolution strategy, the role of multicultural education programs in resolving school conflicts, and resources for teachers.
