These nine papers focus on the topics and themes that emerged from a 1992 conference designed to offer practical guidance to mental health professionals regarding clinical approaches to addressing aggressive behavior by people with mental disorders, particularly in the United Kingdom.
Abstract
An introduction notes that the move from inpatient care to care in the community in the United Kingdom has resulted in the need for an integrated approach to violence prevention and control, involving both the probation and social services and the use of forensic psychiatric teams. It also notes that research on violence in inpatient wards can be used to inform management in the community. Multiagency systems and networks to provide more intensive care and monitoring of individual clients, research in community settings to determine how most effectively to prevent violence and to pilot and evaluate new approaches to services. Other papers focus on the ward environment and violence, the relationship between violence and psychosis, measurement of aggressive behavior and activities in clinical situations, drug therapy for aggressive and violent behavior, and the role of the clinical setting in violence among psychiatric patients.
