A three-part video is designed to help children understand and prevent their emotional abuse, physical abuse, and sexual abuse.
Abstract
The first part, entitled "China Doll," focuses on emotional abuse and is designed to help children begin to get in touch with their feelings by exploring emotions such as anger, fear, sadness, and happiness, and also help them understand the difference between feelings and actions. It can be used for parenting classes and inservice training for family service personnel. The second part of the video, entitled "The Diary," addresses physical abuse. It is designed to help children begin to understand the meaning of "child abuse" and the various kinds of feelings that abused children experience, such as guilt, disloyalty, and fear. Part II is an exercise in understanding feelings, with particular emphasis on the difference between feelings for a person and feelings about what that person may or may not do. The third section of the video, entitled "The Necklace," contrasts an ideal, healthy adult/child relationship with an inappropriate relationship. Most children will focus on and relate to the positive relationship. Sexually abused children, on the other hand, will focus on and relate to the negative relationship.
