This article defines prostitution according to British law and judicial decisions.
Abstract
The Street Offenses Act 1959 makes it illegal for a "common prostitute to loiter or solicit in a street or public place for the purpose of prostitution." The Sexual Offenses Act 1956 outlaws men from knowingly living "wholly or in part on the earnings of prostitution." However, individual cases have shown that the law is not as simple as it looks. Some of the issues that have been raised in British courts vis-a-vis the definitions of prostitution and solicitation relate to the activities involving prostitution, the meaning of the words common prostitution, and the activities that comprise procurement of prostitutes.
