Intended to assist police administrators and other public safety managers in addressing the managerial problems that can arise, this report summarizes current thought on public safety administration and emphasizes the role of leadership.
Abstract
Individual sections examine contemporary leadership styles and the people who developed them and provides techniques that everyone can use to develop their own leadership skills. A section on personal leadership focuses the importance of self- improvement, discusses the concept of servant leadership and the role of the leader as visionary, and compares the reform and new styles of leadership. Case examples are presented from policing innovations in several state, and the writings of Tom Peters, Warren Bennis, Max DePress, Robert Greenleaf, and W. Edwards Deming are highlighted. Appended checklists, suggested readings, list of organizations described, and 17 references
