The analysis reveals that Long Beach has increased from 361,334 in 1980 to 429,433 in 1990 and to 442,106 in 1992. The population became more diverse during this period. Median household and family incomes and per capita incomes increased significantly even when adjusted for inflation, while the percentage of the population below poverty levels increased. Housing units are becoming older, and the number of persons per housing unit increased substantially. The total number of police department employees increased 15.6 percent from fiscal year 1982-83 to FY 1992, while expenditures increased by 70.2 percent. The largest percentage of department resources are spent for patrol services. Crimes against persons increased 48 percent from 1983 to 1992, while property crimes increased by 10.7 percent and the number of narcotics arrests by 20.7 percent. Figures and tables
