This document presents statistics covering notifiable offenses recorded by police agencies in England and Wales in 1994.
Abstract
During the reporting period, police recorded 5.3 million offenses, representing a decrease of 5 percent from the previous year; 93 percent of crimes were against property and 6 percent were violent crimes. Vehicle crimes fell by 10 percent, thefts by 7 percent, and burglaries by 8 percent. Overall, violent crime rose by 6 percent in 1994; within this, the increase in violence against the person comprised 1,500 more life-threatening offenses and 12,700 less serious offenses. Twenty-six percent of all crimes were cleared by police in 1994, compared to a 25 percent clearance rate in 1993. 10 figures, 3 tables, 1 appendix, and 6 notes
