To enable them to perform their duties satisfactorily, Greek police officers receive both initial and advanced training and opportunities for college study.
Abstract
Police training lasts from 6 to 8 months, and courses cover practical and legal aspects of police work. Male and female students between 18 and 26 years of age are accepted if they have completed secondary schooling. Male students must have completed military service or be exempt. Training at the college for noncommissioned police officers lasts a full academic year. The college for police officers has three sections, one that trains police lieutenants, one that provides courses and advanced training for police officers of all ranks, and one that offers advanced training to cadets. Continuing, advanced, and specialized training courses are also available to police officers of all ranks. Police officers who qualify as police captains and hold diplomas as police lieutenants must take continuing education courses that focus on advanced professional and legal training, analysis and discussion of problems encountered at work, and personnel management and planning at the command level. Finally, Greece has a Foreign Languages College that is unique among police colleges in the European Community countries. Its aim is to offer continuing foreign language training, short courses, and practice to police personnel. 2 photographs
