Phases in the popularity and use of LSD, potential legal applications of the drug, and criminal perspectives on LSD use are reviewed.
Abstract
The history of LSD has been characterized by a range of high expectations for its potential applications. In the medical world, for example, researchers have used LSD to reveal the pathogenesis of schizophrenia, facilitate psychoanalysis, and cure alcoholism. On the other hand, the criminal justice system views LSD as an illegal drug. The use of LSD and other naturally occurring psychoactive agents by different cultures and the development and marketing of LSD are discussed. The use of LSD by the Central Intelligence Agency to interrogate suspected Communists and to impose mental control on and manipulate the behavior of those posing a threat to democracy is considered. LSD is described as a psychotherapeutic adjunct and as a psychedelic drug. 50 references
