This handbook provides police officers with a ready reference of criminal law and procedure for use in their daily responsibilities.
Abstract
The handbook clearly explains various offenses, showing the elements and making comments that will be helpful in applying the law. Certain of the statutes are quoted verbatim, such as criminal sexual conduct; in most cases, however, the elements of the statute are outlined. The material is designed to guide officers in assessing the legal ramifications of behaviors with which they are confronted, in preparing reports, and in submitting the case to the prosecutor. After the title for each offense, the handbook places first the section number where it might be found in the Compiled Laws of 1979, then the classification of the offense, and finally the way an arrest may be made. In the area of criminal procedure, the handbook addresses arrest, search and seizure, evidence, the processing of arrests, and testifying in court. Other sections pertain to how and where to find the law and selected court decisions. Subject index
