Juvenile detained admissions increased 35 percent in 1994. The detained "snapshot" population increased 57 percent in 1994, and the length of stay increased 18 percent in that year. During 1994 juveniles detained for violent offenses accounted for 42 percent of admissions; detainees whose leading charge was assault accounted for 9 percent of admissions; burglary detainees accounted for 7 percent of admissions, and drug-offense detainees accounted for 11 percent of admissions; robbery detainees comprised 7 percent of admissions. Juveniles detained for violent offenses stayed an average of 26 days. During 1994, 456 detainees facing nonviolent felony/misdemeanor, traffic, and other miscellaneous charges were admitted. These detainees accounted for 58 percent of all admissions and spent an average of 15 days in detention.
