Crime statistics are compiled for the State, Alabama's nine metropolitan statistical areas, sheriff offices, municipal police, and campus police. UCR data deal with criminal activity in specific geographic areas rather than with law enforcement agency activities. Since UCR offense and arrest data constitute the basis of the report, it is noted that other factors affecting crime are not measured by UCR, such as age, sex, race, economic conditions, culture, education, climate, victim attitudes toward crime and police, and citizen crime reporting practices. The statistical report is intended to inform law enforcement officials and private citizens about criminal and law enforcement activities in Alabama. The statistics indicate that approximately 300 agencies reported known offenses to Alabama's UCR Program in 1994. Data are compiled for violent crimes (homicide, rape, robbery, and assault), property crimes (burglary, larceny, motor vehicle theft, and arson), clearances, and arrests. The data show 203,802 crimes reported in Alabama during 1994, a 3 percent increase over 1993, and a crime rate of 4,830.6 per 100,000 inhabitants. On a daily average, 558 Part I offenses were reported. The value of stolen property in 1994 totaled $183,866,185, with 20 percent recovered.
