Established in response to public concern that reached a peak following a random shooting massacre, the award includes a total prize pool of up to $100,000. Winning projects need only demonstrate that they have been successful in cost-effectively achieving the goal of the award. In 1993, 102 nominations were received from all Australian states and territories. Thirty-six addressed violence prevention among children and youth and included school-based programs. Other nominations focused on domestic assault, violence prevention in minority communities, personal security, and other forms of violence. The main award went to the Kullarri Patrol, a mobile unit based in Broome in the West Kimberly region. Operating on foot or from a vehicle both day and night, the patrol seeks to address potentially violent situations that may involve intoxicated Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal people. The patrol members are local Aboriginal people who bring their knowledge of family relationships and culturally appropriate interventions in conflict situations to assist with resolving problems.
