The institute was attended by school counselors, psychologists, social workers, teachers, health educators, and administrators. This monograph consists of edited transcripts presented in the order in which they were delivered. Some presenters shared perspectives about the development of resilience in families, clinical work, the American culture, and the school setting. Several described specific interventions that have attempted to foster the development of self-awareness and social skills, as well as create new structures for collaborative problemsolving by schools and communities, working together in new ways. One presentation considers individual, family, and cultural factors that influence resilience; and another considers collaboration, prevention, and the nurturing of social skills. Papers that specifically address violence consider its prevalence and some responses, violence-prevention programs in four school systems, the relationship between violence and values, coping with traumatic violence, and violence as a public health emergency. Other papers describe Project Alliance, a law enforcement-school collaboration, and the implementation of school-based mediation programs. A 156-item bibliography
