Abstract
A typology, or structured way of classifying school safety approaches, is used to contextualize different strategies for preventing school-based violence. This specific typology consists of three key strands, i.e., temporal, behavioral, and focal, which describe a continuum, along which different types of policies, activities, and programs regarding school safety and violence prevention can be viewed. The authors examine, within the context of this typology, a wide range of policies and practices currently being used in schools across the country. These policies include, inter alia, student conduct codes, school search and seizure, surveillance and security programs, student identification and restricted access, and suspension. Some prevention options that provide an alternative to traditional crisis management include conflict resolution programs, multicultural education, counseling, and staff development. Finally, this booklet provides a set of prompting questions for each of the major categories along the continuum of approaches. 1 table and 1 appendix
