This handbook, designed for the use of Federal probation and pretrial services officers, provides information on selected mental health disorders and strategies for identifying and supervising mentally disordered offenders.
Abstract
The first chapter contains clinical information on selected mental health disorders, ranging from major depression and bipolar disorders to phobias, personality disorders, and post-traumatic stress disorder, and contains general strategies for supervising mentally disordered offenders with a particular disorder. The second chapter discusses treatment and supervision issues vis-a-vis dually diagnosed offenders, i.e., those who suffer both from a mental health disorder and alcohol or drug abuse. The handbook discusses various psychotropic medications, including antidepressants, antipsychotics, and anticonvulsants; concerns related to child molesters; the correlation between violence and mental health disorders; and national and State mental health treatment resources. The handbook also lists training videos. 1 appendix, and 32 references
