This article aims to stimulate critical discourse on operational policing so that a rethinking of the methods police use to control crime can be encouraged.
Abstract
To these ends, the author proposes a model of police operations that has the potential to revitalize and enhance policing methods. The first section of the article focuses on reform efforts and the neglected domain of operational practice. The second section describes the characteristic elements of the proposed model for enhancing police operations. The model would integrate the key processes of investigation, analysis, and prevention. Finally, the article explores some of the difficulties of implementing this type of model. One of these obstacles, police culture, could arguably be transformed into a resource for operational reform. 5 figures and 29 references
