Abstract
One booklet for youth, entitled, "Growing Up Straight," provides parents with a tool for communication with their children on the subjects of wellness, choices, peer pressure, drugs, and self-identity. Among the topics discussed in this well-illustrated and simply worded book are the uniqueness of each person, sharing responsibilities and making choices within the family, cleanliness and good habits, the effects of drugs, poisons in the house, and the dangers of alcoholic beverages for children. Children are also guided in how to handle situations and resist pressures that are potentially harmful. A profile of the "Youth Out of Gangs Program" is presented in another booklet. The program's goals are to reduce gang membership; increase youths' and parents' awareness of gangs; use city/county resources to provide alternative activities for job opportunities, recreational activities, and educational programs; help youth to develop peer support groups; and dispel myths about gang membership. The third booklet is entitled "Street Smart: A Gang Prevention Program." Topics addressed are the characteristics of a gang, how to identify a gang, who joins a gang, peer pressure, territory or turf, graffiti, tattoos, gang violence, impact on family, gangs and crime, drugs and gangs, gangs and law enforcement, and making a choice.
