This paper offers a general overview of bail support, a service offered to defendants who might otherwise be denied bail in a criminal court, within the context of a pretrial management strategy. The concept of bail support became more popular when, in March 1992, the Home Office made grants available for voluntary organizations to work in partnership with probation services and local authorities to provide bail support. Bail support schemes vary from jurisdiction to jurisdiction. This paper, however, urges that consistent principles underlie all bail support services and that common approaches to assessment be applied. Remand management as well as issues for the future, including changes to the Bail Act 1976, full implementation of section 60 of the Criminal Justice Act 1991, and the supervision grant scheme are discussed briefly.
