The police reported 70,991 domestic assaults, a 7 percent increase from 1993. Murders decreased from 54 in 1993 to 42 in 1994. Total arrests increased 5 percent to 25,634. Arrests occurred in 36 percent of the reported offenses. Sunday was the most frequent day for domestic assaults and accounted for 12,976 of the total. The most frequent hours of domestic assault were between 8 p.m. and midnight, when 30 percent of the offenses were reported. Children were involved or present during 49 percent of the domestic assaults. Wives were the victims in 29 percent of the cases; ex-wives were the victims in 3 percent. Overall, females were victims in 82 percent of the cases. The number of domestic violence complaints in which prior court orders had been issued against the offender increased from 15,631 in 1993 to 17,007 in 1994. Alcohol, drugs, or both were involved in 39 percent of the offenses; alcohol involvement alone accounted for 34 percent. Persons over age 60 were victims in 3 percent of the cases. Tables and figures
