This paper describes six key funding opportunities available for State and local indigent defender programs under Federal law as of May 1995.
Abstract
The Byrne Grants are distributed under an existing program with good prospects for continued funding. The remaining programs are new, having been enacted in the Violent Crime Control Act of 1994. These programs include Federal assistance to ease the increased burden on State court systems, funds available through the Violence Against Women Act, opportunities under prison construction grant provisions, the corrections grant program, and alternative programs and court procedures funded through drug courts.
