An outline for the responsibilities of the interviewer distinguishes between the goals for the police interview and an interview by child protective services or social and health services. Guidelines for preparing for the interview outline the knowledge and information the interviewer should have before beginning the interview. Guidelines are also provided for the interview process, the transition and line of questioning, and the conclusion of the interview. The second major portion of this manual provides material for three role plays designed to make each participant more competent in future interviews. One role play is formatted to deal with the transition from introduction to the actual discussion about the problem at issue. The second role play deals with reassuring the victim and obtaining significant information from a teenage victim, and the third role play addresses the conclusion of an interview. Checklists are provided for the assessment of each role play.
