The report focuses on factors related to the occurrence of traffic accidents, i.e., month, day of week, time of day, and holidays; the characteristics of persons involved in crashes, i.e., sex, age, safety equipment use, child safety restraint use, and type of vehicle; causal factors in crashes, i.e., contributing causes for drivers in crashes, including drug and alcohol use; and county/city data. The figures show that there was a 3.6 percent increase from 1993 in the number of traffic crashes reported and investigated, and a 0.1 percent increase in the number of traffic fatalities. Over one-third of traffic fatalities and one-eighth of crashes were alcohol-related. Nearly 60 percent of all crashes occurred in primarily business areas, while 60 percent of fatal accidents occurred in residential or rural areas. Nearly 80 percent of all motor vehicle occupants, bicyclists, and motorcyclists involved in accidents were using safety equipment. 1 appendix
