Although cocaine remained the most serious drug of concern, recent health indicator data suggested a continuing decline throughout most of the CEWG network. In all but one area, emergency room mentioned declined between the first three quarters of 1989 and the same period of 1990. The sharpest declines occurred in Detroit, Los Angeles, Phoenix, Seattle, and Washington, D.C. The drug continues to rank highest in nonalcohol emergency room mentions in every CEWG city except San Francisco and San Diego, where it ranks second and third respectively. Cocaine-related deaths declined in 13 of the 14 areas where death data were available. Heroin-related deaths revealed a mixed trend. Marijuana prices increased in some areas, were stable in others, and declined in others. Stimulant abuse was most apparent in the western region and Dallas, but declines have occurred.
