The introductory paper characterizes community crime prevention and community policing as promising prevention approaches involving an entire community. The following paper argues that community crime prevention succeeds best if (1) it is preceded by an objective assessment of a community's crime problem, (2) it does justice to the complexity of the crime problem, (3) it involves all participants in a frank dialogue about the improvement of the community. The third article characterizes attitudes toward community policing in the United States. Despite some disillusionment at the lack of measurable success in the United States, community policing is effective if implemented carefully and if underlying crime causes are addressed. The fourth article outlines the community policing program of the German state of Schleswig-Holstein while the final article suggests methods of involving children and juveniles in the communal prevention effort.
