Use of the probe offers a simple, less expensive, and relatively noninvasive technique that can be used in forensic cases in urban and rural settings, and in the detection of historic burial sites. Probes permit a thorough search with minimal surface and subsurface damage, can be used in combination with visual and other research techniques, and provide a fast and effective method for the experienced individual. Like other search methods, use of the probe to find a burial site requires verification based on excavation. The article describes selected cases, involving forensic investigations, mass disaster, and location of historic family cemeteries, to illustrate the effective use of a probe. 3 figures and 15 references
