The study focused on outcome variables including recidivism, pursuit of higher educational goals upon release, employment records, and prison disciplinary problems. The study results suggest that there is a correlation between participation in correctional education and various positive outcomes. Programs that were successful in attaining their stated goals tended to be extensive, to operate separately from the rest of the prison, to provide follow-up to inmates after release, to attract an appropriate audience, and to provide skills relevant to the contemporary job market. The research to date generally supports the hypotheses that participation in prison education programs leads to fewer disciplinary violations during incarceration, reductions in reoffending, enhanced employment opportunities, and increased participation in postrelease education programs. 4 tables, 7 notes, and 72 references
