This study used data from the Royal Canadian Mounted Police- operated Canadian Police Information Center/Fingerprint Service (CPIC/FPS) to determine the type and length of dispositions handed down by Canadian courts for three Criminal Code offenses, namely assault with a weapon, assault causing bodily harm, and uttering threats.
Abstract
Data were collected for the time periods 1980-1993, 1984-1993, and 1986-1993, for the three offenses, respectively. The first section of the analysis focused on 949 criminal records of assault causing bodily harm and 349 criminal records of assault with a weapon; the second section analyzed 431 criminal records for uttering threats. The three analyses presented here quantified the dispositions imposed on offenders, including imprisonment, imprisonment plus probation, suspended sentence, fine, and probation plus fine; most serious disposition; and all dispositions imposed. 18 figures, 27 tables, and 8 references
